TIPS ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT

Don't worry — you almost certainly already have what you need. Most DSLR or mirrorless cameras made after 2010 can photograph the Milky Way, even with the kit lens that came with it. A faster lens just makes it easier to shoot at lower noise; it isn't a requirement.

Camera: Any DSLR or mirrorless with interchangeable lenses, ideally made after 2010, will do the job.

Lens: A kit lens works — you'll just lean on a higher ISO to compensate for its narrower aperture, which means a bit more grain in your shots. A faster lens (f/2.8 or wider) lets in more light, so you can shoot at a lower ISO for cleaner, sharper results. Wider focal lengths (10–28mm) are ideal for fitting more of the sky in frame, but this matters less than aperture speed.

Tripod: Essential — any sturdy tripod will keep your camera steady for the long exposures we'll be shooting.

Headlamp with Red Light: Helps you see in the dark without ruining your night vision or disturbing others nearby.
