Canberra is one of the best places in the world to photograph the Milky Way — low humidity, minimal light pollution, and dark skies just minutes from the city. Our workshops take place on a private property in Gundaroo, 20 minutes from Canberra, where the sky is at its clearest.

WHAT MAKES THIS WORKSHOP DIFFERENT

  • A carefully chosen, safe & secure location. A private dark-sky property in Gundaroo with a genuine variety of foreground subjects — so your Milky Way shots are real astro-landscapes, not just sky.

  • Small by design. Maximum 7 participants, giving everyone genuine one-on-one time with Ari.

  • Complimentary make-up session.  For those able to return if the weather doesn't cooperate, so you still get hands-on practice under clear skies.

  • Ari's Extended Exposure Method — a personal low noise technique to shoot up to 200% longer exposures with no visible star-trailing, taught nowhere else.

  • No camera? No problem. Hire a full Astro Camera Kit for $130 — camera, lens, sd card, tripod, headlight, the works.

  • Weather-proof learning. Clouds or rain, the workshop runs — plus a free make-up practice session night if skies don't cooperate.

  • You keep learning after the night ends. A full written recap of everything covered is emailed to you afterward.

  • Fully permitted & insured. We operate with all required permits and $20M public liability insurance — so you can shoot with confidence, knowing everything's covered.

DIFFICULTY / WEATHER / GENERAL INFO / CANCELLATION

TIPS ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT

  • Don't worry — you almost certainly already have what you need. Most DSLR or mirrorless cameras made after 2010 can photograph the Milky Way, even with the kit lens that came with it. A faster lens just makes it easier; it isn't a requirement.

  • Camera: Any DSLR or mirrorless with interchangeable lenses, ideally made after 2010, will do the job.

​

  • Lens: A kit lens works — you'll just lean on a higher ISO to compensate for its narrower aperture, which means a bit more grain in your shots. A faster lens (f/2.8 or wider) lets in more light, so you can shoot at a lower ISO for cleaner, sharper results. Wider focal lengths (10–28mm) are ideal for fitting more of the sky in frame, but this matters less than aperture speed.

  • Tripod: Essential — any sturdy tripod will keep your camera steady for the long exposures we'll be shooting.

​

  • Headlamp with Red Light: Helps you see in the dark without ruining your night vision or disturbing others nearby.
